This thing has eleven eyes. After painting about three of em I was over it. Haha. FYI, this is watercolor and gouache and finished in photoshop. A short cut that I used was to to have the original painting on one layer in multiply. Then I copied that layer and made a new layer also on multiply. This made all the colors and contrasts a lot richer. And on the copied layer I went in and hit the highlights with the brush either on lighten or overlay. I also had a layer(on darken) underneath for areas that I wanted darker. And 2 layers on top(one overlay and the one above that on lighten) to make the highlights really pop with the brush again on lighten or overlay. Not saying that this is the best way, but it was quick, fun and easy and doesn't scream "he did this with photoshop" all over the painting.
